The ASSET & COMPASS

A course placement program

The Compass test is taken on the computer.

All new students who have not completed college-level English or mathematics courses must take a placement test before registering for classes. Students have a choice of two different tests:

    1. ASSET – a traditional paper and pencil test or
    2. COMPASS – administered by computer

The results from the placement test help students and advisors work together to identify skills, strengths, and knowledge in order to help students succeed in English and mathematics. The ASSET/COMPASS also helps the college use the results to guide students toward classes that strengthen their current knowledge and skills to ensure educational success.

The policy which requires placement testing, before students enroll in English, reading, or mathematics, is mandated by the Alabama State Board of Education. Exceptions to the placement testing policy may be approved if a student has met the minimum required ACT score or if the student has successfully completed English, reading and/or mathematics courses at a regionally accredited college or university. Transcripts and/or ACT scores must be on file before an exception to the placement testing requirement will be approved. Students must have taken the ACT within two years of high school graduation and must have scored at least 20 on the English and mathematics sections of the ACT.

ASSET/COMPASS are not pass or fail tests. They are course placement programs. Scores will indicate strengths and needs in relation to courses required in a program of study. LPN and EMS programs have minimum score requirements for admission.
