Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) Theatre Program will have a benefit production of the spring musical, Mame, March 26th - 28th, in the Lou B. Bevill Fine Arts Center on the Phil Campbell campus. All proceeds of the Friday, April 27th, production will benefit tornado victims.

According to NW-SCC Theatre Co-Director, Jeff McAlister, the musical is an opportunity for the college to give the community something to enjoy on the anniversary of such a tragic event. "Our goal is to make something positive out of such a horrible disaster that has affected so many of us," said McAlister. "Hopefully, we can make a lot of people smile and laugh the last weekend of April and at the same time honor the victims of last year's tornadoes."

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, the story of Mame centers on the character of Mame Dennis. Stepping back in time to the roaring 1920s, a 10-year-old orphan boy is delivered to his swinging, eccentric Auntie Mame while she is hosting a cocktail party for her wildly flamboyant friends including her "bosom buddy", Vera Charles. Thus begins 18 years of fantastic adventures as she proves that life can be a banquet and that in order to experience it fully, a new door should be opened every day. The Jerry Herman score includes "If He Walked Into My Life,"  "We Need A Little Christmas"
and the title song, "Mame".

The show dates and times are as follows:
Thursday, April 26, 7:30 p.m.

April 6, 2012 -- NW-SCC Dual Enrollment Program helps Russellville Duo Graduate from College before High School

Jordan Baker & Brandon Mitchell

NW-SCC Dual Enrollment students, Jordan Baker (left) and Brandon Mitchell (right)
work on finishing their Welding short term certificate at the NW-SCC Phil Campbell campus

Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College's (NW-SCC) Welding program on the Phil Campbell campus will graduate two students this spring with a short term certificate in Welding. What is so special about this you may ask? Well, Russellville High School seniors, Jordan Baker and Brandon Mitchell will accomplish the rare feat of graduating from college before high school.

Baker and Mitchell will be the first people to tell you that the welding program at Russellville and at NW-SCC completely changed their career plans.
"A buddy of mine was in the welding program at Russellville and he talked me into trying it," said Baker. "I would have done something completely different.  I am already recommending it (the welding program) to others (at Russellville H.S.)."  On the other hand, Mitchell has been very familiar with welding since an early age. "My dad's a welder," said Mitchell. "I've pretty much been around it my whole life, but I didn't know it was what I wanted to do for a living until I started the Dual Enrollment program."

The two Russellville High School seniors began the program in their 10th grade year and will finish high school having completed 24 hours of college credit. According to NW-SCC Welding Instructor Brian Keeton, the two students have already made a terrific decision by taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment Dual Credit program and completing their Welding short term certificate. "That really makes a statement to prospective employers," says Keeton. "They not only completed high school but took their summers and applied themselves to their career choice while all their friends were out having fun. That kind of dedication puts those two leaps and bounds ahead others in the employer's eyes."

Baker and Mitchell are very proud of what they have accomplished at such a young age and are ready for whatever their future holds. "I mean we are two 17 year olds that will graduate from college before high school," says Mitchell. "I think that says a lot." Both students are hopeful they will be able to finish their Associate degree at NW-SCC with possibly a minor in Machine Shop after they graduate high school. However, if they have to go to work right out of high school, they feel better about that option now. "With what they have now (Welding short term certificate) they can go through the AIDT training program and start out any where from $12-$16 per hour with a company such as Navistar," said Keeton.

Currently, the Dual Enrollment Dual Credit program at NW-SCC accounts for approximately 12% of the 2012 spring semester enrollment. A total of 504 academic and career tech students are currently enrolled in the program which includes classes on the Phil Campbell and Shoals campus as well as 14 off-site locations.

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College and Athens State University have partnered to develop a Joint Admissions Agreement and a Reverse Transfer Program that benefit students who attend both institutions.

Dr. Robert Glenn, president of Athens State, Dr. Humphrey Lee, Northwest-Shoals president, and representatives from both institutions met on March 30, 2012, in the parlor of Athens State's historic Founders Hall to sign the agreements and setting the stage for both programs to begin.

For the Joint Admissions Agreement, Athens State and Northwest-Shoals will allow students to declare intent to enroll at Athens State University. Northwest-Shoals students must be in good standing and have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to enter the program. They will be eligible to apply for the program after taking a minimum of 16 hours of college coursework at Northwest-Shoals. Students who are accepted into this program will have their Athens State University admissions application fee waived.

The Reverse Transfer Agreement will give students who attended Northwest Shoals but transferred from to Athens State prior to completing their associate's degree an opportunity to earn that community college degree. While attending Athens State, university credits can be transferred back to Northwest-Shoals allowing these students to complete their degree requirements without losing any university credit. Students are eligible for the program when they have earned at least 16 semester credits at Northwest-Shoals, have earned at least 3 semester credits at Athens State, and are in good standing at both institutions.

"We are really looking forward to this new partnership with Athens State," said Lee. "It will be a great benefit to current and former Northwest-Shoals students. Thanks to Athens State our former students will be notified of the reverse transfer program and awarded the associate's degree they earned after transferring. I believe this will give them added motivation to finish out their degree(s) at Athens."

"These agreements exemplifies both Northwest-Shoals' and Athens State's commitment to assisting their students at all stages of their educational process," stated Glenn. "We are proud to partner with our sister institution in the Alabama Community College System in forging new routes to make a bachelor's degree achievable for those who seek it."

Both programs became effective upon the signing of the articulation agreements and will remain in effect unless terminated by either institution.

FEBRUARY 2012

February 22, 2012-- NW-SCC and UNA partner to provide Reverse Transfer Program

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) and the University of North Alabama (UNA) are teaming up to increase the number of degrees awarded in the Shoals and North Alabama. On February 2, 2012, the two institutions formed a new partnership in the form of a Reverse Transfer Program.

The program provides students who transferred from NW-SCC to UNA before completing their associate degree an opportunity to earn the degree. While a student at UNA, university credits will be transferred back to NW-SCC to finish out their degree requirements without the student losing any university credit. There will be no cost to the students for participating in the reverse transfer program.

"This partnership will be a great benefit to current and former Northwest-Shoals students," said Dr. Humphrey Lee, president at NW-SCC. "With the help of UNA, former students will be notified of the reverse transfer program and awarded the associate's degree they earned after transferring. I believe this will provide a great sense of accomplishment to these students and give them added motivation to finish out their degree(s) at UNA."

"The completion of a degree, on a two-year or four-year level, is a major accomplishment, and that is why partnerships like this between universities and community colleges are so important," said Dr. William G. Cale Jr., UNA president. "We're proud to work with NW-SCC in this way, and we look forward to the difference it will make for many students"

Students will have to meet the NW-SCC degree requirements and will then be eligible to go through the graduation ceremonies.

February 8, 2012 -- NW-SCC offers a FREE class to 2012 high school graduates

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL --
Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) is providing a "Jump Start" on education for the 2012 graduating class. According to NW-SCC Financial Aid Director Laurel Turbyfill, the summer scholarship program is designed to help graduating seniors get an early start on college by awarding them one free class.

"This program is intended to help students apply for any unused Federal Financial Aid funds," stated Turbyfill. "These funds along with the summer scholarship program are selected to help college freshmen prepare for their future while saving time and money. We want to encourage students to apply early for federal aid. Those not receiving federal aid will still be eligible for summer scholarships," stated Turbyfill.

Students who graduate from high school in spring 2012 with a Credit-based, Standard or Advanced High School Diploma are eligible to apply. The scholarship has no effect on any other financial aid and it will not affect plans to attend another school in the fall. To qualify for the free tuition scholarship, students should complete the following by the priority deadline of April 2, 2012:

   1) Complete the 2011-2012 Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form using 2010 income information. This application can be submitted online at
www.fafsa.gov.

   2) Complete the NW-SCC application for admission. The application is obtainable from the high school counselor or at NW-SCC. There is no application fee.

   3) Approximately five days after submitting your FAFSA online, all students should contact the NW-SCC Financial Aid office for further assistance. Those not qualifying for financial aid will be eligible to apply for a summer scholarship.

Once this process is completed, the student will then receive information on college placement testing, advising and registration for the 2012 summer semester. Students taking advantage of the "Jump Start" program will be given the opportunity to register early for academic, technical, day, evening or online courses.

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, AL -- Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will hold Transfer Day Monday, January 30th, on the Shoals campus and Tuesday, January 31st, on the Phil Campbell campus at 9:30 a.m.

Transfer Day will offer NW-SCC students the opportunity to meet with different colleges to make the transition from two- to four-year colleges easier, according to Admissions and Recruitment Director, Tom Carter.

"We want to expose our students to as many educational opportunities as possible," stated Carter. "Most of our students do not get an opportunity to go and visit these colleges and see everything they have to offer. Transfer Day allows them that luxury."

Over 20 different colleges and institutions will participate in the event and many will be offering transfer scholarships to NW-SCC students.
