The Polar Express - Chris Van Allsburgh

Activities (Before Storytelling)

Use a train whistle to call children to story.  When children arrive at storytime, ask them what sound they heard.  Have a small toy train set up in the storytime area.  Place a small gift wrapped box (containing the bell) in one of the train cars.  Ask them to speculate about what is inside. After the children have the opportunity to guess, introduce the story.  Tell the children that they will hear a story about a boy's exciting nighttime adventure and the very special gift he receives.

Activities (After Storytelling)

After reading the story, ask children again to speculate what the gift may be.  Open the gift to reveal the bell.  You may also want to have extra bells for each child in the class.  Place them in a sack with a card that says: "To the Boys and Girls from Mr. C.  Hope you enjoy these."

Pass out bells to children.  As children begin ringing bells, have Santa come in to visit with children.

*As an extra, allow children to wear pajamas to school for the reading.
